Day 4--Mamma Carmen's

Hola! Today we traveled to Guatemala City to Mamma Carmen's house. Mamma Carmen has been rescuing children off the streets of Guatemala City for over 20 years. She currently has 82 orphans and today we saw them all! We treated scabies and tinea, gave antibiotics for some dental infections that were causing pain, and gave thorough exams to all. Of course we showered them with candy, glove balloons, markers and crayons, ect......The children are cared for remarkably well for the conditions they live in. But as a mom, it was difficult to see the toddlers running about with no supervision and wearing themselves down until they fell sound asleep on the tile floor. They are left to lay there while the other children climb over and step on them. Broke our hearts, and we did ALOT of picking up. Jen, the nurse from Casa Angelina, was amazed at how fast we saw all the children--we rocked the house!!

Total lives touched: 267 (plus 13 team members)

For me, this has been the hardest day to blog. The sadness in the eyes of the kids really got to me today--to all of us. But, I called Eric over our lunch break and learned that our nephew had been killed in a car accident in Cincinnati last night. He was only 19 and it is a tragic loss for my family. Please keep my husband in your thoughts and prayers as he copes with this loss with me feeling a million miles away.

Our thoughts are with you guys, as we are hearing the census is still really high and please believe that it is hard to be here and we are working very hard to build relationships so more of you can come experience what we have this week. Love to all!!!!!!!!
